Cultured pearls are formed by man induced nucleation; introducing into the oyster or mollusk an irritant or nucleus (such as tissue mantle from another mollusk or a mother of pearl bead), causing the shellfish to secrete layers of nacre to form a pearl.

Cultured pearls come in a wide variety of sizes, shapes, types, and colors; naturally colored when formed within the shellfish; and dyed, irradiated, or color enhanced after harvest.
